The first night: ground contact
At 3:00 a.m. on December 26, 1980, Sgt. Jim Penniston and the airman John Burroughs leave the east gate of RAF Bentwaters to investigate lights in Rendlesham Forest. They initially think of a plane in distress.
About 50 meters into the forest, Penniston describes a triangular structure approximately 3 meters in base, 2 meters in height, with a smooth surface similar to glass or black obsidian, and symbols carved into its surface. He places his hand on it and draws the symbols in his service notebook – this notebook will be found and authenticated years later.
Penniston says the structure took off slowly, passed over the trees and disappeared at high speed. An internal report is submitted the next day to the chain of command.
The Halt report – official document at the MoD
On the night of December 27 to 28, Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Halt, deputy base commander, decides to inspect the site himself with a group of soldiers. He carries a dictaphone. His 18-minute recording is authentic and has been made public.
On January 13, 1981, Halt submitted an official memo to the British Ministry of Defense :
“Early on the morning of December 27, 1980 (around 3:00 a.m.), two USAF military police saw unusual lights behind the rear gate of RAF Woodbridge [...] The object was described as metallic and triangular in shape, measuring approximately two to three meters at its base and approximately two meters in height. »

— Colonel Charles Halt, memo to British MoD, January 13, 1981
This document – the “Halt Memo” – was declassified by the MoD in 1983 under the British Freedom of Information Act. It's a official US Air Force document reporting a UFO sighting to a foreign government authority. It constitutes one of the most solid pieces in the history of institutional ufology.
Ground markings and radiation measurements
The day after the first sighting, the soldiers returned to the day site. They find:
- Three circular depressions in the ground, forming an equilateral triangle of 3 meters on each side, approximately 3.5 cm deep.
- Surrounding trees with broken or burned branches at upper level.
During Colonel Halt's nighttime inspection (night 2), a team measures radiation at the site. Halt's audio recording states:
“We're getting readings on the Geiger counter. [...] 0.1 millirem — it's in the center. Readings increase as you get closer to the center. »

— Dictaphone recording from Halt, December 28, 1980
The measured values (0.07–0.1 millirem/h) are modest but above the expected background for this region. British civil foresters subsequently consulted noted that certain trees on the site had abnormal scars on their inner side (facing the supposed contact zone) – not on their outer side, which rules out a conventional cause such as lightning.
Halt speaks publicly — 2010
In 2010, Charles Halt, now retired, signed an affidavit and testified at the National Press Club in Washington DC alongside other military officers:
“I believe that the objects I saw up close in Rendlesham Forest were of extraterrestrial origin, and that both the US and UK security services attempted to downplay the significance of what happened in that forest. »
Source document (EN): “I believe the objects that I saw at close range in Rendlesham Forest were extraterrestrial in origin and that the security services of both the United States and the United Kingdom have attempted to subvert the significance of what occurred at Rendlesham Forest. »
— Charles Halt, affidavit, 2010
⚠ Editorial note
The conclusion of extraterrestrial origin is Halt's—it is not established by the available physical evidence. What is established: an unidentified object was observed by American military personnel, left traces on the ground, caused radiation readings, and is the subject of an official report to the MoD. The nature of the object remains unknown.
