Dr Benjamin Simon is a recognized psychiatrist and neurologist, specializing in the treatment of war trauma using hypnosis. He is not affiliated with UFO groups and approaches the case with skepticism. His sessions, conducted from January to June 1964, produced coherent narratives between Betty and Barney — but obtained separately, with no contact between them during the hypnosis period.
Simon himself will never conclude that the Hills were abducted by aliens. He remains cautious and suggests that accounts under hypnosis may be influenced by Betty's previous nightmares. His original recordings are held at the University of New Hampshire Archives.
⚠ The limit of hypnosis as a method of investigation
- Hypnosis does not guarantee the reliability of memories — it can amplify confabulations or dreams.
- Betty had had detailed nightmares about the abduction before the sessions—a risk of memory contamination.
- Studies in cognitive psychology (Loftus, 1979) have since shown that hypnosis can create very convincing false memories.
