The essentials in 30 seconds
The “UFO Iran” request covers two separate official files, forty-six years apart. Tehran, night of September 18 to 19, 1976 : two F-4 Phantom II fighters of the Imperial Iranian Air Force intercept a luminous object; crews report instrument and weapons system failures on approach — incident is subject to investigation declassified DIA memorandum (US military intelligence). Gulf/CENTCOM area, August 26, 2022 : an American military video titled “formation of 4 UAPs above water, Iran” was published in May 2026 in the 2nd PURSUE tranche (reference DOW-UAP-PR050). Neither case is officially explained.
Tehran 1976: the interception told by the pilots
Shortly after midnight, the Mehrabad control center received calls from local residents describing a luminous object above Tehran. A first F-4 takes off from the Shahrokhi base: as it approaches the object, the crew reports the loss of its instruments and communications - which return when it moves away. A second F-4, piloted by the lieutenant (future general) Parviz Jafari, obtains a radar echo compared to that of a tanker plane. Jafari will describe an object with alternating bright lights, and a secondary, smaller object breaking away from the first and hurtling toward his plane — as he attempts to fire an AIM-9 missile, its weapons panel and communications fail, according to his account. In 2007, Jafari, then a retired general, repeated this testimony publicly at the National Press Club in Washington.
The DIA document: why this case is different
The incident could have remained a pilots' tale. What sets it apart: a Defense Intelligence Agency memorandum, written at the time by the American defense attaché in Iran and since declassified, summarizes the incident in several pages and calls it a remarkable case — multiple credible witnesses, different points of view, electromagnetic effects reported on three devices. The document is a fact; he reports testimonies, he does not certify the nature of the object. The conventional hypotheses (bright planet, meteor, coincidental failures on difficult-to-maintain F-4s) have each been proposed — none has achieved consensus.
2022: the formation of four objects, published by the Pentagon in 2026
The second Iranian file is recent and sourced from the official database: the document DOW-UAP-PR050, published on May 22, 2026 on WAR.GOV/UFO in the 2nd installment PURSUE, is an American military sensor video titled “4 UAP Training Iran Aug 26, 2022 over water” (CENTCOM area). Like the other videos in the batch, AARO clarifies that the chain of custody is not fully established and that the title is that of the original uploader. Another piece from the same lot documents a “instant acceleration” over Syria (PR051). Our complete file on the 2nd tranche →
What the “Iran dossier” allows us to say
Two eras, two sensors, one constant: military crews describe objects that they do not know how to identify, and official documents record without concluding. The 1976 case remains one of the most documented multi-witness incidents in history; the 2022 video awaits independent analysis. Nothing in either case establishes a non-human origin — and nothing, either, has explained them.
Frequently asked questions
What happened in Tehran in September 1976?
On the night of September 18-19, 1976, two Iranian F-4s intercepted a luminous object over Tehran. Crews reported instrument and weapons failures as they approached the object. The incident is summarized in a declassified memorandum from the American DIA.
Who is Parviz Jafari?
The pilot of the second F-4, who became a general in the Iranian Air Force. He publicly repeated his testimony in 2007 at the National Press Club in Washington, describing the failure of his weapons panel when firing.
Is there an official document on the Tehran incident?
Yes: a Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) memorandum, written by the American defense attaché in Iran and declassified, which describes the case as remarkable. He reports the testimonies without concluding on the nature of the object.
What is UFO Iran 2022 video?
Exhibit DOW-UAP-PR050, published on May 22, 2026 on WAR.GOV/UFO: an American military sensor video titled “formation of 4 UAPs over water, Iran, August 26, 2022”. The case is classified unresolved.
Has the Tehran incident been explained?
No. The conventional hypotheses proposed (bright star, meteor, coincidental blackouts) have not achieved consensus, and no official explanation has been published.
